9 Tips For Dressing For The Workplace

When it comes to dressing to impress, there's no denying that Of Mercer founders, Dorie Smith and Emelyn Northway, know how to pull it off! Their brand features a collection of work-appropriate clothing that inspires us to bridge the gap between creative expression and professionalism. From ultra-flattering shift dresses to elegant blazers that can go from "desk to dinner" in a snap, the brand is catching the eye of working gals all over the world who are looking to up their style game at work without having to up their budgets.

Today, Dorie and Emelyn are here to share nine tried-and-true tricks for making an appropriately eye-catching statement while strutting the halls at your paying gig. Read on for their strategies, and then curate your own collection of must-haves here!

1. Little Black Dress

If you own one piece of workwear, it should be classic black sheath dresses. If you can't find one that fits you perfectly off the rack, make the investment to get it tailored. It's the essential building block of any work wardrobe. It also provides endless opportunities for layering, accessorizing and, thus, countless outfit options. And when you're in a pinch because you haven't done laundry, you can never go wrong with a great-fitting LBD!

2. Statement Color

If you like color, wear it! The rules of dressing for the office are changing. Even in the most formal office environments, a bold color is more than OK. In fact, it can be an asset—wearing a bold color in a sea of black suits projects confidence. Choose classic, not-too-tight silhouettes (like a hot pink pencil skirt), and pair the pop of color with neutral separates and accessories to make sure you don't overdo it.

3. Pocket Detail

If you are going to a networking event, wear a dress with pockets. Pockets provide a great place to stash your business cards so you can look professional and don't have to rummage through your purse to grab them.

4. The Perfect Silhouette

Always be mindful of your hemlines and necklines, and how they behave over the course of your day. When you're shopping, do a "sit down test" to make sure you won't suddenly show off your upper thigh when you take a seat at the conference table. Be wary of necklines that may unexpectedly open up or creep downward throughout the day. We found wrap dresses to be guilty of this, so we designed our own wrap mid length dresses specifically to wrap above the bust—no camisole necessary!

5. Legging-Like Pants

If you wear it to yoga, you shouldn't wear it to work. We constantly hear complaints from HR teams about employees embracing the athleisure trend in the office. So, invest in a great pair of skinny-leg work pants that feel like leggings for women, but aren't. Make sure they have "real-pant" features like belt loops or pockets that make it obvious you aren't wearing your Lululemons.

6. Neutral Sweater

Always leave a classic cardigan on the back of your desk chair for easy access during the day. Choose a neutral color that will go with anything. It's the perfect defense against over-air-conditioned offices, and will help you seamlessly transition between seasons. It will also keep your shoulders covered for that unexpected meeting with your boss.

7. Feminine Draping

Dress for comfort, but not at the expense of looking sloppy. Look for fabrics that are wrinkle-free to avoid creases from sitting at a desk all day. And if your idea of comfort means a looser-fitting dress (something that never touches your body, for example), make sure you aren't choosing something that resembles a sack. Opt for a style that has tailored detailing and a feminine drape.

8. Modern Blazer

Invest in pieces that can go from work to weekend. A tailored blazer looks equally chic as part of a suit for a big board meeting as it does over your favorite vintage T-shirt for Sunday brunch. When going for a more traditional look, choose one with a peaked lapel, and for a more modern look, go collarless!

9. Your Personal Style

No matter what your office dress code is, the most important thing is to always embrace your personal style and wear clothes that make you feel your best. When you are confident in your outfit—whether it's a feminine evergreen dress or pair of slacks and a button-up blouse—you will exude that confidence in everything you do, including totally nailing that important client presentation.

25 Epic Cosplayers to Inspire Your Disney Halloween Time Costume Game

There are many, many reasons to head to Mickey's Halloween Party, Disneyland's annual Halloween Fest. Not only is there free flowing candy, opportunities to meet a wide variety of classic (and rare) Disney villains (from the Queen of Hearts to Hades) and those super cool overlays (the Tim Burton take on Haunted Mansion: to die for!), but it's also the perfect place to get in touch with your inner cosplayer, Disney style of course.
Mickey's Halloween Party is the ONLY time when us adults can come through the gates in full costume, since this is a privilege that only children under 14 usually possess (and you know you're always jelly of the girl in the Cinderella gown). After you decide that you're going (and you should, you really, really should), then comes the hard part: figuring out who to dress up as! To help you out with the oh-so-important decision, we have 25 inspiring and awesome examples of Disney best halloween costume for you and your squad that go beyond the basic princess. (These magical costumes are great for Halloween activities outside of Disneyland as well!)

1. Inside Out: Get emotional over your choice of costumes with Joy and Envy from Pixar's Inside Out. Recruit a Sadness, an Anger and a Fear, and you've got the whole gamut of feelings. This one is relatively easy to pull off, as adhering to their color code is the most important (and bonus points for getting the appropriate hue of hair color).

2. The Girls from Beauty and the Beast: "When you hear your bae Gaston is now at Disneyland but Belle still doesn't give AF." Best. Caption. Ever. We love that this trio of pals went as the Gaston groupies!

3. Gadget Hackwrench from Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers: Do you remember Gadget from Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers? It doesn't matter if you do or don't, because I think we can all agree that this adorable (and comfy) costume is perfect for any occasion. You just need a gray jumpsuit, purple belt, goggles and a big set of ears. Done and done.

4. Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Take the traditional gypsy costume and Disney-it-up a notch with this The Hunchback of Notre Dame-inspired outfit. A white blouse, purple skirt and blue corset are all you need. Tambourine is totally optional.

5. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia: While you could do Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in the outfits they wore for most of the movie, this couple mixed it up and went for the final segment of the film, when Nick signs up with the force. It's like a "where-are-they-now" spin on Zootopia.

6. Peter Pan: If you have a crew that refuses to grow up, this Peter Pan group outfit might be just the thing. While we do see a fair share of Peters and Tinks, it's more unusual to see a Wendy and a Tiger Lily.

7. Jane from Tarzan: Watch out Tarzan, Jane's coming! We love the incredibly cheery yellow dress that Jane sports in the 1999 Disney flick, but as you know, her dress doesn't stay that pristine for long. Note: This dress takes some serious planning to pull off properly.

8. Ariel from The Little Mermaid: While most costume-crazed ladies would go for the more traditional tailed Ariel, we're totally digging this toga-wearing version of the Little Mermaid ladies halloween costumes. And it is seriously easy to do; you just need a white sheet, a rope and a long red wig. Done!

9. The Cinderella x Snow White Mashup: If you can't decide between Cinderella or Snow White, why not combine the two? They both have horrible stepmoms, are good at cleaning and meet their prince in the end, so it's kinda the same thing.

10. Gaston from Beauty and the Beast: "No one's slick as Gaston. No one's quick as Gaston." Well, except this chick. She is! Why be beholden to gender when dressing up Disney?!?

11. Wendy and Dipper from Gravity Falls: It's not just movies that should get Mickey's Halloween Party love — it's sometimes fun (and easy) to look for inspo on the small screen. This Wendy and Dipper duo is a fab pic for couples (you can also add on a Grunkle Stan and a Mable to make it a group costume).

12. Tarzan x Star Wars Mashup: You saw the Jane costume higher up on the page, right? Well, if that's too girly for you, toughen it up by doing a Jane x Boba Fett mashup. It's crazy how well those two work together.

13. Lilo and Stitch: It's a bit of Disneybounding but in a way that still works for a costume party. Individually, you might not know who they are, but together it's totes obvs. Bonus: You can wear the dresses IRL!

14. Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas: Who can make Oogie Boogie look chic and feminine? This girl! Burlap, bugs and green tights are all you need to pull this one off (the dyed green hair does help though).

15. Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit: The thing about this getup is that you have to possess the figure to pull it off (it helps that this cosplayer totally does). But if you've got it, flaunt it! You just need a body-hugging, low cut dress, blue gloves and a long red wig. If you get tired of wearing this, bring costume No. 8 with you for a quick change (it'll be way more comfy, and you already have the wig).

16. Disney Fairies: While many might default to Tinkerbell, you might consider going as one of her crew, like Fawn, Silvermist, Vidia, Iridessa or Zarina, the Pirate Fairy. For a big impact, get a whole bunch of you dolled up as Pixie Hallow residents — major squad goals.

17. Star Wars: The Force Awakens: This is a fab pick for a Force lovin' couple. While we don't know if we're more impressed by the costumes or the car, we do know that you can't go wrong with Star Wars-inspired halloween costumes for men. There are several combos you can do: Rey with Poe Dameron, Rey with Finn or even Rey with BB-8 (which works sooo well if you have a small child).

18. Bert and Mary from Mary Poppins: Cute couple alert! Cute couple alert! There are a whole bunch of Mary Poppins costumes out there, but the look really gets elevated when you have a Bert by your side (especially when he's wearing such a sporty jacket).

19. Aladdin: The blue face paint may be quite the commitment to this costume, but the results are worth it. Spray paint a pair of Mickey gloves to really give it that cartoonish vibe.

20. Moana: Disney's Moana isn't even out yet, but her cosplay game is already strong. We love this barefooted and boldly confident style (and also that there isn't a love interest in Moana, it's all about HER journey).

21. Rapunzel from Tangled: Who says you have to be a girl to pull off Rapunzel?!?! Not us! And not this guy. He totally went for it with his purple ensemble, epic long blonde beard and bare feet (nice deet!).

22. Elsa from Frozen Fever: Elsas are ALL OVER THE PLACE. So if you're going to pull out the Snow Queen this Halloween season, try her look from the short Frozen Fever (minus the sniffles, that is).

23. Star of Star vs. Forces of Evil: If you indulge in contemporary Disneyana on TV, then you've already fallen in love with Star Butterfly from Star vs. Forces of Evil, the magical princess from the dimension Mewni, and seriously, there's no way you couldn't. Dragging your own Marco around is totally optional.

24. Anastasia and Drizella from Cinderella: While many dream of being Cinderella, really, how fun is it to be that PERFECT? Not so much. Instead, grab a BFF and be Cinderella's really-not-so-ugly stepsisters.

25. Vanellope von Schweetz of Wreck-It Ralph: If you're more of a t-shirts and jeans type of gal, then the low-maintenance (yet totally adorable) Vanellope might be just your speed. And you know what: You can snack on as much candy as you want since you ARE a resident of Sugar Rush.

Tips: Disneyland has a few conditions that must be considered when selecting a costume for Mickey's Halloween Party. The costume in question must be family-friendly (so avoid those saucy Sexy Snow White or Sexy Nemo costumes). And as much as you know how amazingly awesome your costume is, you can't pose for photos for your adoring public in your costume (it confuses the kiddies and they'll think you could be a cast member). They'd rather you not wear layered costumes or bring big props (if you do, there will be additional screenings). And they warn that you should not wear long costumes, since tripping may happen. But most of all, they want you to have fun!
